LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Tuesday rejected an idea put up by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) to split the upcoming ODI cricket series between the two nations into two sites.
According to a source, a PCB official stated that both countries should play cricket at the same site for the World Cup 2023 qualifiers.
Pakistan and Afghanistan will face off in a three-match One-Day International series in Sri Lanka in the first week of September.
In late August, Pakistan’s national cricket squad will return from the Caribbean Islands.
“We have made it plain to the Afghan board that the national team players only have ten days between their travels and three-match series before preparing to welcome the Kiwis, who are scheduled to arrive in Pakistan on September 11th. It would be tough for the team members to continue travelling from one place to the next under that circumstance. “We have proposed that one site be chosen for all three matches,” the PCB official stated.
He stated that the Afghan cricket body is putting the finishing touches on the Pakistan series strategy.
“As the Pakistan squad has a full itinerary till May 2022, only this window is open for the series “explained a representative from the PCB. “We want to get all of the concerns resolved as soon as possible for the sake of both teams,” he said.
He mentioned how tough it was to organise a cricket series on foreign land these days because of the coronavirus outbreak. However, a PCB official stated that the board want to honour its international obligations “for the benefit of supporters on the other side of the border.”
In the next days, the Afghan board is expected to come up with a new strategy.
“We don’t see any reason why the series shouldn’t go on as scheduled. The series’ final schedule will most likely be released over the following several days. Given Pakistan’s extensive international obligations over the next eight months, any delay would be detrimental to the hosts,” he concluded.
