According to a top interior ministry source, Ghani has departed Kabul for Tajikistan.

After militants ringed Kabul, the Taliban and Afghan government officials are in talks for a peaceful handover of power.

On Sunday, Taliban forces encircled Afghanistan’s presidential palace, promising not to assault while handover discussions were underway.

According to the organisation, its members have been told to avoid violence and to provide safe passage to anybody seeking to flee Kabul.

“Until the transition process is completed, the other side (the Afghan government) is responsible for the security of Kabul,” a spokesman for the organisation said in a tweet.

According to several media sources, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has left Afghanistan for Tajikistan as the Taliban prepares to take over Kabul.

When contacted by Reuters for comment, the president’s administration said it “cannot disclose anything regarding Ashraf Ghani’s movement for security concerns.”

Meanwhile, a Taliban spokesman told Reuters that they were looking into rumours of Ghani’s departure.
