As numerous helicopters flew above the city centre, sirens could be heard.
Afghanistan, Kabul – The Taliban have invaded Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital, from all sides, according to the Afghan interior ministry on Sunday.
Sirens and occasional gunshots could be heard. Multiple helicopters were dropping flares above the city centre.
The Taliban have stated that they do not want to seize the Afghan capital “through force.” As its fighters marched to the outskirts of Kabul, the armed organisation released a statement.
“Negotiations are underway to guarantee that the transfer process is done safely and securely, without jeopardising anyone’s life, property, or honour, or jeopardising Kabul’s life.
“The Islamic Emirate urges all of its troops to stand at the gates of Kabul, not to try to enter the city,” a Taliban spokesperson tweeted, but several locals said militants reached portions of the city’s outskirts quietly.
Employees in government offices were fleeing in fear. Thousands of people have taken up residence in parks and open areas around Kabul, fearful of the future.
On Twitter, President Ashraf Ghani’s chief of staff advised Kabul residents to “please don’t panic.” There isn’t any issue. Kabul’s situation is under control.”
