Hashmat Ghani Ahmadzai, the brother of former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, is said to be supporting the Taliban.
Hashmat reportedly promised his support in the presence of Taliban commander Khalil-ur-Rehman and religious scholar Mufti Mahmood Zakir, according to media sources.
Hashmat had previously stated that his brother Ashraf Ghani had fled Afghanistan and was currently in a Middle Eastern nation.
He claimed that no civilians had died since the Taliban arrived, and that corruption was rampant under Ashraf Ghani and Hamid Karzai.
Hashmat has expressed his want for the Taliban to restore peace to the Afghan people.
After fleeing to the United Arab Emirates in the face of the Taliban’s fast advance, Ashraf Ghani stated he wished to return home and that he backed negotiations between the Taliban and top former officials.
“For the time being, I am in the Emirates to put an end to the violence and turmoil,” he said in a video message, his first since departing the city on Sunday. He declared that he had “no intention” of staying in exile.
