ATTOCK: Prime Minister Imran Khan commented on Friday about Pakistan’s skyrocketing sugar costs, claiming that the unexpected closure of three mills in Sindh led to the rise in the commodity’s price.
His statements came during his address at the laying of the foundation stone for the Maternal and Child Hospital in Attock.
“In Pakistan, the price of sugar has risen to Rs140 per kg. I enquired as to why this was the case. I learned that three operating sugar mills in Sindh have been closed “stated the prime minister.
According to the prime, when the sugarcane crushing season begins in Pakistan, sugarcane is first sent to sugar mills in Sindh and subsequently to sugar mills in Punjab.
He said that when three sugar mills in Sindh closed, there was a significant decline in supply, causing prices to rise to Rs140 per kg.
The prime minister went on to remark that as a result of the limited supply, sugar mills in Punjab began to stockpile the product.
“I informed the chief secretary that our legislation outlaws hoarding, therefore if the sugar mills are doing so, we must recover the stock and sell it in the market, causing the price to fall.”
“We discovered that the sugar mills had acquired a stay order against the rule since July.” As a result, our administration was unable to intervene,” Prime Minister Imran Khan explained.
According to the prime minister, it was also uncovered that the Pakistan Competition Commission had fined the mills Rs40 billion after they were determined to have stockpiled sugar through cartelisation. “They got a stay order on it as well,” he replied, apparently irritated.
Further criticising the sugar mills, Prime Minister Imran Khan stated that they had gone so far as to obtain stay orders against the Rs500 billion in taxes levied by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for selling sugar “off books,” which was discovered by the Sugar Commission, which conducted an investigation into the country’s recent sugar crisis.
The prime minister directed Chief Minister of Punjab Usman Buzdar, the law minister, and the attorney general to get the stay orders lifted immediately.
“It is a heinous injustice that the sugar mafia makes billions after breaking our people’s backs. And when the government takes action, they win stay orders “He made a statement.
