KUALA LUMPUR (ASIA NEWS NETWORK/THE STAR) – Malaysia’s Merdeka 118 skyscraper will be the world’s second highest structure and the tallest structure in South-East Asia.
This comes after the completion of its spire and tower, which will stand at a height of 678.9m. Only the Burj Khalifa in Dubai (830m) is taller.
Malaysia Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob remarked in his inaugural statement that he was happy to announce the completion of the tower spire in the midst of the Covid-19 outbreak.
“I was told that Merdeka 118 will be the first building in Malaysia to receive triple platinum ratings and worldwide sustainability certifications, including the extremely coveted Leadership in Energy and Environment Design” (Leed).
“This is not only a remarkable success in the realm of engineering, but it also improves Malaysia’s status as a modern and developed country,” he said on Tuesday during a ceremony commemorating the completion of the tower’s spire (Nov 30).
On August 31, 1957, then-prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman issued Malaysia’s declaration of independence in the next-door Stadium Merdeka. That day is currently recognised as the country’s independence day.
