The LHC has expressed its concern with the Local Government Amendment Ordinance.

LAHORE — The Lahore High Court (LHC) voiced its displeasure with the Local Government Amendment Ordinance 2021 on Tuesday.

The court found several provisions of the ordinance illegal during the hearing and summoned the Attorney General and Advocate General to the next hearing.

The court has also requested an implementation report, and the hearing has been postponed until December 23.

The Punjab Cabinet had already adopted a revised draught bill for a new local government structure.

Local body elections in Punjab would be held on a party-by-party basis, according to the approved draught law. Metropolitan mayors and district mayors will be directly elected by the people.

In addition to the nine divisional headquarters, the province will feature eleven metropolitan corporations. Gujrat and Sialkot will be metropolitan corporations.

There will be just one Metropolitan Corporation in Lahore, with a system of metropolitan and district councils in the remainder of the divisional headquarters, Sialkot, and Gujrat.

Only district councils, village councils at the village level, and neighbourhood councils in urban areas would exist in Punjab’s remaining 25 districts.

Municipal Corporations, Municipal Committees, and Town Committees have all been disbanded throughout the province’s metropolitan regions, which span 25 districts.

The new draught legislation abolishes the decades-old structure in urban areas, replacing it with a system of district councils for all rural and urban communities.
