ISLAMABAD – The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday halted further proceedings in a defamation case filed by Prime Minister Imran Khan against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Khawaja Asif by the trial court.

The court served notice on the premier and requested a response during the hearing.

It should be noted that Khawaja Asif had questioned the validity of PM Imran’s statement in the case, which was recorded through video link. He said that the trial court refused to let him record the disagreement about PM’s evidence.

Athar Minallah, the Chief Justice of the International Human Rights Court, expressed his displeasure with the case’s prolonged adjudication. The counsel for Khawaja Asif told the court that the complaint was filed in 2012, but that the parties’ objections were handled in 2021.

The judge stated that the court had already directed that the defamation suits be concluded as quickly as feasible. He estimated that the defamation suit would take two months to complete.

Meanwhile, Asif’s lawyer confirmed that both parties had obtained a restraining order.

PM Imran had previously launched a Rs10 billion defamation action against Khawaja Asif in 2012, alleging theft and money laundering using the Shaukat Khanam Memorial Trust (SKMT) monies.
