HASAKA – According to a military source in the Kurdish-led forces in Syria, 23 Islamic State terrorists were killed in skirmishes when the jihadist organisation raided a jail in the northeastern city of Hasaka on Thursday
According to the source, seven members of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and an ally security group called the Asayish were killed in the raid, which was an effort by Islamic State to rescue captives in the facility.
The SDF said it had apprehended 89 terrorists in the region, where skirmishes were ongoing, and a witness reported hearing aeroplanes from the US-led coalition above.
The SDF is backed by the US and has fought with the US-led coalition against the Islamic State.
While the Islamic State was expelled from the majority of the land it controlled in Syria years ago, its cells continue to carry out attacks in regions controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Syrian government.
