Lata Mangeshkar, the legendary vocalist, died Thursday at the age of 92. In early January of this year, she was taken to a city hospital after testing positive for Covid-19 and being diagnosed with pneumonia. Lata Mangeshkar was hospitalised to the intensive care unit (ICU) with minor symptoms and was healing slowly.
According to Indian media, the musician was taken off the ventilator after showing indications of recovery. Her health, however, deteriorated on February 5, and she was placed back on ventilator support. Because her health was grave, the experienced vocalist was subjected to intensive therapy and was tolerating the operations prior to her untimely death.
Lata Mangeshkar was affectionately known as the “Nightingale of India.” She began singing when she was 13 years old and recorded her first song in 1942. Throughout 30,000 songs in various languages have been written by her over the course of her seven-decade career. Lata Mangeshkar’s voice may be heard on songs such as ‘Ek Pyar Ka Nagma Hai,’ ‘Raam Teri Ganga Maili,’ ‘Ek Radha Ek Meera,’ and ‘Didi Tera Devar Deewana,’ to mention a few.
Lata Mangeshkar received the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honour, in 1969, the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award, in 1999, and the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour, in 2001. In 2009, she was also named a ‘Officier de la Legion d’Honneur’ (Officer of the Legion of Honour), France’s highest civilian honour.
Her siblings included Meena Khadikar, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, and Hridaynath Mangeshkar.
