The judgement of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) to postpone the second round of local body elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been stayed by the Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday (KP).
During the hearing, an attorney for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) told the court that PHC had postponed the polls without hearing the commission’s reasons.
Meanwhile, Justice Ayesha Malik stated that before delivering the ruling, the high court should have listened to the electoral commission’s position.
The second round of local body elections in KP, which was set to take place on March 27, was postponed by PHC on February 4, 2022.
The court noted during the hearing at the Abbottabad registry that heavy snowfall had made it difficult for people to vote. The judge ordered the district authority to reschedule the local body elections after Ramadan.
The delegates of Kohistan and Naran have submitted a petition seeking that the elections be postponed due to adverse weather conditions.
Candidates can submit their nomination papers from February 7 to 11 as per the prior timetable. The nomination papers will be scrutinised from February 14 to February 16.
On February 28, the contending candidates will be given their election emblems.
In the first phase of the KP LG election in December 2021, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) suffered a huge blow despite being in power, when Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) candidate Zubair Ali beat Rizwan Khan Bangash.
The JUI-F candidate received 62,388 votes, while Rizwan Bangash of the PTI received only 50,659 votes, according to the results.
