The dead toll in Ukraine has risen to 137, with 316 people injured.

After Russia started a full-scale invasion of Ukraine by land, sea, and air, Ukraine’s president claimed on Thursday night that 137 people had been killed and 316 injured so far.

According to Volodymyr Zelensky, the current dead toll includes both Ukrainian army and civilians.

Heavy exchanges of fire were taking place in the northeastern regions of Sumy and Kharkiv, as well as Kherson and Odessa in the south, as night fell for the first time since Vladimir Putin launched the all-out assault, while Kiev said heavy Russian shelling was still ongoing in the eastern Donetsk region.

Moscow’s defence ministry stated that ground forces from occupied Crimea had pushed in, claiming to have “neutralised” Ukraine’s air defences and damaged 11 airfields, as well as taking an airbase barely 25 miles from the capital’s centre. Ukraine’s air force is reported to be over 200 aircraft strong.

Russian forces are also said to have attempted to seize control of Ukraine’s Serpent Island, which is located in the Black Sea less than 30 miles from Nato member Romania, as well as the infamous Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which the Ukrainian president described as a “declaration of war against Europe.”
