Authorities announced Thursday that two people were killed and others were hurt in a violent midnight earthquake that shook broad portions of east Japan and sparked a tsunami warning.
Early on Thursday, residents and officials in the country’s northeast were still assessing the damage caused by the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck soon before midnight.
A tsunami warning for waves of up to a metre was cancelled in the early hours of Thursday in portions of northeast Japan, after officials discovered water levels up to 30cm higher than typical in certain regions.
Throughout the night and early hours of Thursday, the area was rocked by a series of lesser jolts.
