On Wednesday, Australia’s top cricket authority named Andrew McDonald as national coach, two months after Justin Langer abruptly left the country.
McDonald, 40, was awarded a four-year deal as head coach after receiving acclaim for his efforts as interim coach following Langer’s surprise departure on February 5 that stunned the cricket world.
He is taking on one of the most high-profile roles in Australia, where cricket is an integral part of the national identity and the team’s exploits captivate much of the country.
“I am pleased to be given this amazing chance for what will be an exciting future ahead,” McDonald said after Cricket Australia revealed his appointment.
“My objective is to capitalise on the squad’s progress, depth, and experience while working collaboratively with the group and throughout the game,” he stated in a statement.
