North Korea launches a ballistic missile as tensions between the two countries rise

North Korea fired a ballistic missile toward its eastern waters on Wednesday, according to South Korean and Japanese officials, only days after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un promised to develop nuclear weapons “at the fastest possible pace” and threatened to use them against adversaries.

The launch happened six days before a new conservative South Korean president enters office for a single five-year term, marking the North’s 14th round of weapons shooting this year.

The missile was launched from the North’s capital region and flown to the waters off South Korea’s eastern coast, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It described North Korea’s repeated ballistic missile launches as a “grave threat” to international peace and security, as well as a breach of UN Security Council resolutions prohibiting the North from launching any ballistic missiles.
