Inflation in Nepal has reached a six-year high due to rising food and energy prices

In the month ending mid-April, rising food and energy costs brought Nepal’s annual inflation to a near six-year high, just as the economy was beginning to recover lost tourist revenue due to the coronavirus outbreak.

According to statistics issued by Nepal Rastra Bank, annual consumer price-based inflation increased to 7.28 percent from 7.14 percent the previous month and 3.10 percent a year ago.

From a year ago, edible oil costs jumped 28.36 percent, followed by an 11.56 percent increase in milk products, eggs, and lentils, more than tripling food inflation to 7.4 percent, according to statistics.
