ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court asked the newly established joint investigation team (JIT) on Thursday to provide an interim report on the death of veteran journalist Arshad Sharif within two weeks.
The ruling was given by a five-member panel led by Justice Umar Ata Bandial while hearing a suo motu case over a month after Mr Sharif was murdered down by Kenyan police in a suspected mistaken identification case.
During today’s hearing, Additional Attorney General Amir Rehman presented a notification of the formation of a new JIT in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directives.
The investigation team consists of five people: DIG IB Sajid Kiyani, FIA Waqaruddin Syed, MI Murtaza Afzal, ISI Mohammad Aslam, and DIG FIA Awais Ahmed.
The extra attorney general informed the court that if necessary, key suspects like as Waqar Ahmed and Khurram Ahmed would be returned to Pakistan via Interpol. He stated that the whole investigation into the murder case was dependent exclusively on the assistance of Kenyan officials.
The chief judge stated that the JIT might approach the Supreme Court if they run into any problems throughout their probe. He also ordered the SSP of Islamabad police and his staff to assist the JIT.
The case was later delayed for two weeks by the court.
