LAHORE – The delineation of Punjabi seats for the local government elections will begin the next week, according to the Pakistani Election Commission’s announcement on Friday.
The main electoral authority said that the process will begin on December 16 and end on January 6, 2023. The ECP will redraw the boundaries of the province’s constituencies for the third time.
On January 7, a temporary list would be released, and from January 9 through January 23, objections to the delimitations would be heard. On February 12, the ECP said that a final list of new constituencies will be released.
Elections for Punjab’s local bodies will finally take place in April 2023, according to a recent announcement by the ECP. In a meeting presided over by Chief Elections Commissioner (CEC) Sultan Sikandar Raja, the decision was made. The main electoral authority needed to delimit the constituencies for a third time, according to the briefing given to the gathering.
According to the commission, the provincial government is to fault for the delay in the LG elections since it frequently amends the regulations.
The PTI’s local bodies legislation were changed with its own version when the PML-N briefly assumed power in Punjab earlier this year.
The PTI acquired control of the province after the former chief minister Hamza Shahbaz-led administration was overthrown, and they overturned the PML-version N’s of LG elections.
The most recent LG elections in Punjab were held on a party basis in response to a Supreme Court ruling. The PTI, however, rendered the local bodies financially and administratively ineffectual, and their terms were set to expire in 2021, thus the election candidates were unable to serve the public.
The most recent Punjab Local Government Act 2022 mandates that all divisional heads hold direct elections for district councils and mayors of metropolitan corporations.
