(AFP) Cairo – The image of tent towns housing displaced Palestinians in Gaza’s war-torn territory brings up painful memories for Israel’s Arab neighbors, particularly Egypt and Jordan.

“That’s how the Nakba started,” asserts the Gaza-based rights organization Al Mezan, echoing widespread fears that Israel has plans to expel the coastal region’s inhabitants.

The Arab world refers to the expulsion or forced relocation of 760,000 Palestinians during the conflict that resulted in the establishment of Israel 75 years ago as the Nakba, or “catastrophe.”

The fact that Israel has been at war with Hamas ever since the Islamist organization attacked southern Israel on October 7 and claimed 1,400 lives has fueled the concern that history will repeat again.
