In a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday, a group of Canadian legislators stated their “grave concern over the situation unfolding in Pakistan” and urged him to address the growing human rights breaches in the nation.

The MPs’ worries coincide with the Pakistani government’s on-going crackdown on the leaders and members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, said that more than 7,500 PTI members, including women, had been detained by the police after two violent raids on his home in Lahore’s Zaman Park.

The letter, which was signed by 16 politicians who are part of the Parliamentary Friendship Group between Canada and Pakistan, emphasises the value of the right to peaceful protest and vehemently condemns any acts of violence, arbitrary detentions, and the pressing need for fair trials in Pakistani civil courts.

The lawmakers emphasised the fundamental nature of democracy, the rule of law, and freedom of expression in any society, underscoring the importance of upholding these principles without compromise in Pakistan as representatives of their constituents, particularly thousands of Canadians with Pakistani ancestry.
