Following criticism that the scoring system needed to be “simplified,” the International Cricket Council said on Wednesday that it has altered it ahead of the second edition of the World Test Championship (WTC).

Teams will be awarded 12 points for a win, four points for a tie, and six points for a tie, according to the sport’s world governing organisation (ICC), with the percentage of points earned used to decide the rankings.

Previously, each series was given the same amount of points, divided by the number of matches played.

The modification will be implemented in the WTC’s second edition.

After the COVID-19 epidemic interrupted the schedule, the ICC announced in November that teams would be ranked based on the proportion of points gained from completed matches to decide the finals.

In a statement, ICC Acting Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said, “We heard feedback that the prior points system needed to be streamlined.”

“When proposing a new, standardised scoring system for each match, the Cricket Committee took this into account.”

“It upheld the principle that all matches in a WTC series count toward a team’s standings while accommodating series ranging in length from two to five tests.”

Last month, New Zealand won the first WTC championship by defeating India by eight wickets in the final.

The England-India series kicks in the second WTC on August 4 in Nottingham. The nine clubs will play six series, three at home and three away, with the deadline set for March 31, 2023.
