Reuters, TOKYO, June 17 – A government panel said Japan intends to encourage competition in the smartphone app payments market, which is currently dominated by Apple (AAPL.O) and Google, by prohibiting big app store operators from pressuring software developers to adopt the operators’ own payment systems.

Major providers of smartphone operating systems (OS), according to the panel’s final report, should be required to give customers secure alternatives to their own app stores for users to download apps.

In general, Apple’s iOS and Google’s (GOOGL.O) Android divide the Japanese mobile OS market.
