ISLAMABAD: Opposition members in the National Assembly filed a no-confidence resolution against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday.

Officials from the National Assembly secretariat verified that the resolution had been presented by opposition lawmakers.

Marriyum Aurangzeb, Information Secretary of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), stated that National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser was not present in his office, which is why the paper was presented to the secretariat.

Aurangzeb’s confirmation occurred as a team of opposition MPs arrived to Parliament House in Islamabad, including Rana Sanaullah Khan, Ayaz Sadiq, Shazia Marri, and Marriyum Aurangzeb.

In order to depose Imran Khan, the opposition parties resolved to call a no-confidence vote during a meeting of the PML-N parliamentary party. Shahbaz Sharif, the party’s president, made the choice.

Interestingly, attendees in the meeting were also told to stay in Islamabad for at least three weeks, according to the report. MPs were cautioned that their absence during the motion “would not be allowed.”

Since its formation in September 2020, during the height of the coronavirus crisis, the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), a coalition of 11 political parties, has held public protests around the nation to increase pressure on Prime Minister Imran Khan.

PDM President Fazlur Rehman indicated in February that the opposition coalition had resolved to bring the motion against Khan and will contact the government’s partners in the Centre to do so.

“All component parties in the PDM have decided to initiate a no-confidence resolution against these illegitimate authorities and to approach the government’s partners in this respect,” he stated.

Some political watchers think the opposition believes a change in the US presidency in January 2021, with Joe Biden replacing President Donald Trump, will help their cause.

Democrats have long supported civilian power in Pakistan. However, regardless matter who occupies the White House, Pakistan’s political environment is likely to remain tumultuous and chaotic.

Meanwhile, three prominent opposition leaders — PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, Sharif, and Rehman — will hold a news conference later today.
