Carlos Alcaraz overcame 269th-ranked qualifier Mark Lajal to begin his Wimbledon championship defence on Monday, as Andy Murray pondered whether to end his All England Club singles career.
As the play began, Australian Open winner Aryna Sabalenka was returning home after withdrawing from the competition due to a shoulder issue.
Alcaraz, who is still just 21, is vying for his fourth Grand Slam championship and wants to join Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic as the only men to win the French Open and Wimbledon in consecutive years.
