AFP, Guwahati, India At least nine people have died as a result of the torrential rains and raging rivers that have devastated over three million people in northeastern India and adjoining Bangladesh, according to disaster officials on Thursday.

Every year, the monsoon rains bring about immense harm, but scientists claim that climate change is causing weather patterns to change and more catastrophic storms to occur.

The northeastern Indian state of Assam’s disaster officials reported that eight deaths had occurred in the last day, bringing the total number of deaths from the downpours since mid-May to 46.

Over 1.6 million people in the state have been impacted by the submersion of over 2,800 settlements, according to reports.
