PARIS (AFP) — Defending champions Netherlands defeated Argentina 3-0 on Wednesday to guarantee their spot in the women’s Olympic hockey final.
In Friday’s final, they will play either China or Belgium, who play later.
Encouraged by a predominantly orange-clad audience, the Dutch gained the lead early on but were thwarted by a strong Argentine defense throughout the first quarter.
They also suffered a setback when the ball bounced up into Joosje Burg’s face, resulting in her being carried from the field with blood gushing from her nose.
After 21 minutes, Luna Fokke broke the tie by dribbling past Cristina Cosentina in the Argentine goal while pursuing a long overhead pass.
