Johannesburg (AFP) – On Tuesday, fast bowler Anrich Nortje was ruled out of the Champions Trophy due to a back issue.

Cricket South Africa confirmed the 31-year-old’s latest injury setback only one day after naming him to his country’s 15-man team for the event in Pakistan next month.

Nortje, the quickest bowler in international cricket at his prime, got a scan on Monday, according to a CSA statement, “which revealed the extent of the injury”.

The statement did not explain the nature of the injury.

Nortje, who has appeared in 19 Tests, 22 one-day internationals, and 42 T20 internationals, has not played international cricket since the T20 World Cup final in Barbados in June.

He was set to make a comeback against Pakistan last month, but injured his toe when batting in the nets.

Nortje was also ruled out of the current SA20 franchise league, where he was scheduled to play for Pretoria Capitals.

CSA stated that a successor would be named later.
