Senior officials said an oil tanker exploded in northern Nigeria on Saturday, killing at least 60 people and injuring hundreds more.
Kumar Tsukwam, commander of Niger State’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), verified the event in the Suleja Local Government Area, claiming that hundreds of people were hurt while attempting to gather petroleum from a petrol truck that had spilled on the road.
“So far, 60 corpses have been recovered from the scene,” Tsukwam stated. He did, however, state that all FRSC troops and other agencies are still on the scene conducting rescue efforts.
In a second statement, Abdullahi Baba-Arah, director general of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), said the explosion happened after one oil tanker collided with another and then attempted to transfer the oil.
While this was going on, the fuel came into touch with a generator necessary to finish the transfer, causing an explosion that killed and wounded numerous others.
He went on to say that the fire damaged items worth millions of naira, the West African nation’s currency, which presently swaps at around 1,560 to the US dollar.
