The Foxtrot Network, a Swedish group allegedly responsible for assaults against Israeli interests in Europe on behalf of Iran, was sanctioned by the United States on Wednesday.
In addition to imposing sanctions on Foxtrot’s commander, Rawa Majid, the US Treasury and State Departments described the group as one of Sweden’s “most notorious criminal gangs,” claiming in statements that he had “specifically cooperated with the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security.”
“Iran’s brazen use of transnational criminal organizations and narcotics traffickers underscores the regime’s attempts to achieve its aims through any means, with no regard for the cost to communities across Europe,” said Scott Bessent, the secretary of the Treasury.
According to the agencies, President Donald Trump’s reinstituted “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran prompted the imposition of the sanctions, which typically consist of asset freezes and prohibitions on US entry.
Last May, Sweden’s Sapo spy agency declared that it thought Iran had enlisted members of Swedish criminal gangs as go-betweens to carry out “acts of violence” against Israeli and other Swedish interests.
That declaration was made three months after police discovered a live grenade on the grounds of the Israeli complex and weeks after gunshots was heard outside Israel’s embassy in Stockholm during the night.
Citing papers from Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad, the Swedish tabloid Dagens Nyheter (DN) at the time claimed that the Iranian regime had recruited Majid’s Foxtrot and the longtime rival gang Rumba.
According to DN, the Mossad records revealed that Majid, a Swedish-Turkish dual national known as the “Kurdish Fox,” had been detained in Iran and given a jail sentence or an order to assist with the Iranian government.
The embassy was later shot at in October, and the day after, there were two explosions close to the Israeli embassy in Copenhagen. Danish police have detained Swedish nationals in connection with the alleged grenade assault.
Last year’s strikes in Europe happened as tensions between Israel and Iran grew as a result of the disastrous conflict in Gaza.
However, in recent years, Sweden has failed to control the rise in gang violence, with killings and bombs now happening regularly all throughout the nation.
