All foreign countries, even key US friends, would suffer at least 10% tariffs. China faces 54% tariffs, the EU 20%, Japan 24%, and the UK 10%. Beijing promises countermeasures, warning that falling tariffs may “endanger” global economic progress. Australia criticizes tariff as ‘not the act of a friend’

US President Donald Trump sparked a potentially disastrous global trade war Wednesday by imposing 10% tariffs on goods from throughout the world and severe additional penalties on key trading partners, including 29% duties on Pakistan.

On what he dubbed “Liberation Day,” Trump slapped substantial tariffs on key trade partners China and the European Union while holding up a chart in the White House Rose Garden.

Canada and Mexico continue to face a 25% tax, with exceptions for commodities covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

“The tariffs will not be perfectly reciprocal. Perhaps I could have done it. But that would have been difficult for many nations,” Trump remarked.
