KABUL: Mullah Baradar, a co-founder of the Taliban, will lead the new Afghan government, as the world watches with interest to see how the militants build an inclusive administration that includes other parties.

According to three sources, Baradar, who runs the Taliban’s political office, would be joined in top government roles by Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob, the son of late Taliban founder Mullah Omar, and Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai.

There were no further information concerning Dr Abdullah Abdullah, Hamid Karzai, Gulbadin Hekmatyar, and other Afghan leaders being included in the new administration.

The Taliban, who took Kabul on Aug. 15 after sweeping across the nation, have run into opposition in the Panjshir Valley, north of the city, with intense combat and deaths reported.

Thousands of militants from regional militias and government armed forces have gathered in the steep valley under the direction of Ahmad Massoud, the son of former Mujahideen commander Ahmad Shah Massoud.

Attempts to reach an agreement appear to have failed, with each side blaming the other for the failure.
