KABUL (Reuters) – Two explosions struck the Afghan city of Kabul on Wednesday, killing at least one person and injuring at least six others, including three women, according to Taliban officials and locals.

A civilian was killed and six others were injured in a vehicle bomb attack in Dasht-e Barchi, a largely Shiite Muslim region of western Kabul, said interior ministry spokesperson Qari Sayeed Khosty in a tweet.

There was no confirmation of fatality figures, but one Taliban spokesman, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said seven people were killed and nine were injured.

According to locals, a second explosion occurred in the neighbouring Karte 3 region. According to a Taliban spokesperson, security personnel are currently gathering information.

Images shared on social media showed an automobile engulfed in flames and mangled wreckage.

The explosions were the latest in a string of attacks on Kabul in recent days, with Shiite neighbourhoods in the city’s west repeatedly targeted.

There was no claim of responsibility, although Islamic State terrorists have claimed credit for a number of attacks against Shia sites, including mosques.

Mohammad Nabi, a Dashti Barchi local, said the second explosion looked to have also resulted in injuries, although there were no immediate details.
