ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) denied a plea seeking to hold PML-N vice president Maryam Nawaz and former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in contempt of court for allegedly uttering derogatory statements against the judiciary.
Athar Minallah, Chief Justice, issued the verdict he had reserved earlier today. Kulsoom Khaliq, a female lawyer, submitted the plea, seeking that the court penalise the PML-N supremo’s daughter and the ex-premier for “their aim to disrespect the judiciary” under the country’s contempt of court legislation.
“After his retirement, [ex-CJP] Saqib Nisar’s position is that of an ordinary citizen,” the top IHC judge remarked before deferring the decision.
“Judges, in their elevated position, should have a huge heart.”
According to the petitioner, Abbasi asked, “If Nawaz Sharif can go to jail, why can’t Saqib Nisar?” She noted that the PML-N politicians used derogatory language against the judiciary and sought to drag it into shame by disparaging Saqib Nisar.
The female attorney appealed with the high court to hold them in contempt of court for “violating the dignity of justice.”
