At least nine people were killed in two bomb blasts onboard separate minibuses in Mazar-i-Sharif on Thursday, authorities said, a week after a devastating explosion rocked a Shiite mosque in the northern Afghan city.

Since the Taliban retook control in August, the number of violent public assaults has decreased, but the Sunni Islamic State organisation has continued to target Shiites, whom they consider heretics.

According to Balkh provincial police spokesperson Asif Waziri, the bombs occurred within minutes of each other in various areas of Mazar-i-Sharif as commuters were headed home to break their dawn to dark Ramadan fast.
