MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine on Wednesday of demolishing the Kakhovka dam at the request of the West, calling it a “barbaric” war crime that intensified the confrontation with Moscow.

The massive Soviet-era Kakhovka dam, which is controlled by Russia, was burst early Tuesday, releasing flooding across a section of the battleground in southern Ukraine.

Ukraine blamed Russia for the explosion. Russia said Ukraine damaged the dam in order to restrict water supply to Crimea and deflect attention from a faltering attack. According to certain Russian-backed officials in the area, the dam may have fallen.
