Steven Spielberg, a seasoned filmmaker, was ‘amazed’ by Amrish Puri, the legendary villain of Indian cinema, and even travelled to India to audition him.

One of the most renowned villains of Indian cinema, Amrish Puri had done over 450 films in his distinguished career and is recognised by many of his negative roles, but, the Western public remembers him best as Mola Ram, from Steven Spielberg’s ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’.

Puri, on the other hand, was already working on at least 22 films when the acclaimed director cast him in the part. When Spielberg learned about it, he flew to India to audition and sign him for the adventure film.
