TUNIS: On Sunday, politicians from the EU, Italy, and the Netherlands travelled to Tunisia to discuss ways to support the country’s struggling economy and stem the influx of unauthorised immigrants into Europe.
The IMF is currently negotiating a rescue loan for the north African nation, which serves as a main entry point for migrants and asylum seekers trying the perilous Mediterranean Sea crossings.
Last week, EU states agreed on measures to hasten the return of migrants to their countries of origin or “safe” transit countries, such as Tunisia, under pressure to curb arrivals.
On Sunday, Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, travelled to Tunisia alongside Giorgia Meloni, the prime minister of Italy, and Mark Rutte, her Dutch counterpart.
