Scientists cautioned Tuesday that the Himalayan glaciers that provide almost two billion people with essential water are melting more quickly than ever before as a result of climate change, putting communities at risk of unpredicted and expensive calamities.
According to a study by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), the glaciers melted 65% more quickly between 2011 and 2020 than they had over the prior ten years.
Ice will melt as it warms up; this much was known, but the pace at which it does so is surprising and extremely concerning, according to main author Philippus Wester. The pace of this is far quicker than anticipated.
