Yoshimasa Hayashi, the foreign minister of Japan, said on Saturday that Sri Lanka is an important participant in a Tokyo-led initiative aimed at fostering economic and security co-operation in the Indo-Pacific region while also containing an assertive China.
According to Hayashi, Sri Lanka’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean is essential for achieving a free and open Indo-Pacific. He was speaking after a meeting in Sri Lanka’s capital city of Colombo with Ali Sabry, his counterpart there.
The project, which the Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida launched in March, involves infrastructure cooperation, support for marine security, the provision of equipment and boats for the coast guard, and assistance to rising countries.
