(AP) – There are some terrific humor and ingenious twists in “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” but one brilliant concept stands out: putting Ice Cube as the voice of the film’s mutant bug nemesis Super Fly.
It may have been difficult to appreciate the value of having the emcee who rapped about “dropping bombs on your moms” as the MVP of a PG-rated kids’ movie in the past. But, if you consider the series and videogames, we’re currently on the seventh “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” film. That’s a lot of movies for a piece of IP that’s stuck to lunch boxes rather than pop culture. It was time for the turtles to either “chickity-check yo’ self” or try something fresh, as Ice Cube would say.
“Mutant Mayhem,” which hits theaters on Wednesday, can’t get over the sensation of walking on well-covered turtle ground.
