In an effort to be the first country to carry out a soft landing on the lunar south pole, which is thought to be home to sought-after pockets of water ice, Russia launched its first moon-landing spacecraft in 47 years on Friday.

The first lunar mission from Russia since 1976 is competing with China and the United States, all of which are aiming for the lunar south pole with their sophisticated lunar exploration programs, as well as with India, which launched its Chandrayaan-3 lunar lander last month.
