Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro (Reuters) – After lunging at Argentinos Juniors’ Luciano Sanchez during a Copa Libertadores encounter in Buenos Aires last week and leaving the defender with a terrible injury, Fluminense’s former Brazil international Marcelo was given a three-match suspension by CONMEBOL.

The governing body of South American soccer added a $6,000 fine to the punishment for the 35-year-old left-back on Thursday.

When Marcelo was moving towards Sanchez, his leading foot skipped the ball and firmly struck the Argentinean high in the shin. The Argentinos player fell to the ground in agony when his leg gave apart beneath him at a startling angle.
