BEIJING: China promised “resolute and forceful measures” on Sunday in response to Taiwan Vice President William Lai’s weekend visit to the United States, which Beijing claimed it was closely observing.
An unnamed foreign ministry spokesperson issued a statement that was posted online in which she claimed, “China is closely monitoring the development of the situation and will take resolute and forceful measures to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
Lai, a candidate for president of Taiwan in the upcoming elections, will only make transit stops in the US on his way to and from Paraguay, where he will attend Santiago Pena’s inauguration.
