LAHORE — The interim Punjab government has ordered a high-level investigation into mob attacks on various churches in Jaranwala, a tehsil in the Faisalabad district, amid blasphemy claims.
A government spokeswoman confirmed that over 100 persons had been detained as a result of the damage, while also clarifying that there had been no reports of casualties due to prompt response by police, local administration, and peace committees.
He said that around 5,000 people gathered in Jaranwala when word spread that a Christian cleaner had desecrated the Holy Quran, and that the crowd thereafter assaulted churches in several Christian localities.
A high-level inquiry has been initiated into the situation, according to the spokesman, who described it as a well-thought-out scheme to cause turmoil in the country.
He said that police were able to thwart an attempt to attack the homes of the Christian community, and that the peace committee also had a part in this.
Five churches and many structures were burned due to blasphemy claims, as a heated group of members torched the homes of Christian members suspected of blasphemy.
According to a local pastor, the Salvation Army Church, Shehroonwala Church, United Presbyterian Church, and Allied Foundation Church in the Isa Nagri neighborhood were attacked on Wednesday.
