YANGON, Myanmar (Reuters) – A shallow and powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 shook the Myanmar-India border region early on Friday (November 26), but no damage was reported.
The quake struck at a depth of 12 kilometres and was around 140 kilometres from Aizawl in northeastern India, according to India’s National Center for Seismology.
According to witness statements posted on the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre’s (EMSC) website and Twitter users, it was felt in Bangladesh’s Chittagong and as far away as Kolkata, India’s east Indian city, some 280 miles (450.62 km) from Aizawl.
“Very strong,” one witness from Chittagong, which is roughly 184 kilometres (115 miles) west of the epicentre, said on EMSC.
According to EMSC and India’s earthquake monitoring organisation, tremors were reported across northeastern India and major cities in Bangladesh.
The temblor’s magnitude was downgraded to 5.8 by EMSC after it was first assigned a magnitude of 6.0.
