On Wednesday, Tom Cruise returned to the Cannes Film Festival for the first time in 30 years to promote “Top Gun: Maverick,” receiving an honorary Palme d Or and gushing about his love of film.

As the stars entered the screening for the long-awaited sequel to Cruise’s superstar-making 1986 smash, the French Air Force demonstration team flashed across the sky above the red carpet.

The film was set to premiere at the French Riviera Film Festival in 2020, but it was cancelled due to the Covid epidemic, and its release was repeatedly postponed.

Cruise was adamant that it was worth waiting for theatres to reopen, and that he had never contemplated releasing “Top Gun: Maverick” on Netflix.

He told a Cannes crowd before of the screening, “That was never going to happen.”
