ISLAMABAD: In-absentia funeral prayers were given at the Faisal Mosque in Islamabad on Friday for Syed Ali Geelani, the leader of the Kashmiri independence movement.

President Arif Alvi, federal ministers, lawmakers, other government officials, and hundreds of others delivered funeral prayers.

Moeed Yusuf, the National Security Adviser, Lt Gen Faiz Hameed, the Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence, and Chaudhry Fawad Hussain, the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, were also present.

Syed Ali Shah Geelani, a symbol of the Kashmiri freedom movement and former chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), died on Wednesday night in the Indian-controlled Kashmir city of Srinagar.

Geelani died at the age of 92 after a protracted illness, according to Kashmiri Media Service.

In the early hours of Thursday morning in Srinagar, Geelani was put to rest amid strong deployment of the Indian occupation army.

Geelani had requested that his remains be interred at Mazar-e-Shuhada, but Indian occupation troops took his body from his family and buried it forcefully in a cemetery in Haiderpura, Srinagar.
