On Saturday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) deemed the Election Act Amendment Ordinance unconstitutional.
Section 181A is in direct contradiction with clause 233 of the Election Act, according to the Election Commission’s ruling. Amending the legislation goes against openness and providing all candidates an equal chance. Campaigning is prohibited for the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and Governors.
Speakers, Federal Ministers, and Prime Minister’s Advisers will not be permitted to campaign due to the Code of Conduct. Members of the Assembly and Senators will be allowed to campaign on a conditional basis. Members of Parliament who are taking part in the election campaign will follow the regulations.
