A fire that started at a store where witnesses claimed gasoline was being unloaded on Saturday resulted in at least 35 fatalities in southeast Benin, according to a spokesperson of the justice ministry.

Near the Nigerian border in Seme-Podji municipality, the fire started about 09:30 local time.

Prosecutor Abdoubaki Adam-Bongle stated in a ministry statement that “the fire burned down the store and according to an initial assessment resulted in 35 deaths, including one child,” and added that an inquiry had been launched to establish the reason.

The fire was presumably sparked during the emptying of gasoline bag, according to the witnesses questioned.

More than a dozen additional people had critical injuries and are receiving medical attention, he added.

A tower of black smoke and flames is seen rising above what looks to be a market as astonished onlookers watch from a safe distance in a video that has been extensively circulated on social media and is alleged to be of the fire.

The footage could not immediately be verified by Reuters.
