PARIS (Reuters): For the first time since the disputed election this month, the highly divided French parliament convened on Thursday to choose the assembly’s president. The outcome of the vote might have a significant impact on who will be in charge of national politics for many years to come.

Though no single group secured a majority, a coalition of leftist parties unexpectedly emerged victorious in the election, surpassing both the far-right and centrist factions of President Emmanuel Macron.

It is customary to elect a speaker who sets the agenda and moderates arguments for the lower house of parliament, and this process is known as election of the president.
